Renoux(ed) strength: Matt and his wife lean on each other after her cancer diagnosis

Kelly Renoux's breast cancer diagnosis came just months after her mom was diagnosed.

FRISCO, Colo. — You might know the name Matt Renoux.

Matt joined 9NEWS in 1999 in the Mountain Newsroom, which is located in Silverthorne.

But this a story about Matt's life outside of work – and his wife, Kelly Renoux.

The two self-proclaimed theater geeks met in college. They both had jobs with insane hours and worked a lot of holidays.

They like snow and don’t mind several months of winter.

And Kelly loves Shakespeare so much, she and Matt named their daughter Sonnett.

These two incredibly positive people have had an extremely challenging last year and 1/2.

Kelly’s breast cancer diagnosis came just months after her mom was diagnosed. Genetic testing revealed she had the BRAC2 gene, and a mammogram found the cancer.

“It was just pure coincidence that the results came back on the same week,” Kelly said.

Treatment included surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Week after week, they would drive from Frisco to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora.

Kelly said Matt is her rock.

“He literally came down and drove me to every single chemo appointment, sat there in that awful room anywhere from 2-6 hours," she said. "He would take our daughter out and go play on the patio.”

Still, they managed to stay positive through treatment and enjoy the things they love. Kelly never stopped working at Copper Mountain, where she is the director of employee experience.

Recently, she even performed in a one-woman show in Summit County.

Matt kept working at 9NEWS, where he always manages to share the best stories from the High Country while profiling athletes for the 2020 Olympics.

They admit, it’s been a long 15 months and they’re eager to put cancer behind them. Kelly recently completed her final treatment, as well as reconstructive surgery. Matt said he's been blown away by Kelly’s strength.

“It couldn’t have been me, I’ll tell you that, I couldn’t (have) done it," he said. "She did things people shouldn’t have to do, good thing she did.”
