Cub Scout from Rifle sold more than $20,000 worth of popcorn in 2 years

He credits his success to using a simple message and keeping a positive attitude.

RIFLE, Colo. — Cub Scout Westley Anderson has a lot of patches on his vest.

Among them is the Top Seller popcorn patch that he earned for selling a lot of popcorn.

“I got that one for working really hard,” he said.

During the time the scouts sell popcorn, his family's house is packed with it. Over three years, Westley has sold thousands of dollars worth of popcorn.

His first year, he sold around $5,000 worth. In 2022, he sold around $10,000 worth. And in 2023, Westley sold $11,000 worth of popcorn.

His pack's Popcorn Kernel, Erin Beaudett, said Westley has more ground to cover with a smaller population than scouts on the Front Range.

“Westley is the number one seller in our district, which is the Three Rivers District, and that's the largest geographic district in Colorado,” Beaudett said.

All those sales add up, because 70% of the popcorn sales stay with his pack.

“Our Unit Pack 221 gets money to help kids pay for their uniforms, go to camp, those sorts of things,” Beaudett said.

Scouts who sell popcorn also get a cut of the profit, with Westley earning enough cash to buy a computer, and Nintendo Switches for himself and his little sister.

“For this year, I earned $1,000 for selling $11,000 worth of popcorn," he said.

He credits his success to using a simple message and keeping a positive attitude.

“I say, 'excuse me, would you help me, would you like to have some Boy Scout popcorn,'” he said. “I never have an attitude. Even if it's really hard, I keep trying.”
