Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., the nation’s largest television station operator, today offered to buy Tribune Media Co., parent of Denver television stations KDVR-Fox31 and KWGN-Channel 2, for $3.9 billion.

If the deal goes through, Sinclair will have beaten 21st Century Fox, Nexstar Media Group Inc., and Blackstone Group, who also were bidding for the Chicago-based broadcasting company.

The Denver Business Journal reported last week that Fox (Nasdaq: FOX) and Blackstone were considering putting together a deal to buy Tribune (NYSE: TRCO), which was formed when its parent company divided its television and print media holdings into two separate companies.
