Evergreen Lake skating rink almost ready to open

Ice crews are monitoring conditions daily.

Get out your skates: Evergreen Lake is almost ready for ice skating this season. Since Thanksgiving, the staff at the Evergreen Park and Recreation District have been flooding the lake nightly to build up the ice to a safe level for skating.

According to the Evergreen Parks and Recreation website, ice skating is tentatively scheduled to open Friday, Dec. 28 at 8 a.m., assuming the ice is thick enough by then.

Kelly Green, interim marketing manager of Evergreen Parks and Recreation, said the ice must be at least a foot thick before the lake will open to the public.

“We want to make sure we have 12 inches before we put anyone else out there,” Green said. “We measure the ice daily. Every day our parks crew is taking measurements to make sure that it is safe for people to be out there and having a good time."

Green said the hours and days are subject to change due to weather and ice conditions.

"Some days we'll be open. Some days we'll be closed," she said. "If we get warm weather, then we are not allowed, and the ice levels are not where they need to be then we will shut down for the day.”
