DENVER — Chris Tavarez is a Sports Anchor and Reporter at 9NEWS in Denver, Colorado.
Chris joined 9NEWS in November 2024.
Most recently, he was the Sports Director at KTXL in Sacramento. While in NorCal, he covered the Kings day in and day out. He was there for the start of Mike Brown’s tenure, Sac snapping the longest playoff drought in NBA history and the birth of The Beam. He also covered all things Bay Area, including the 49ers, Warriors, Giants and A’s.
Before his time in California, he spent 10 years in Austin at KXAN covering the Longhorns, Austin FC’s inaugural season in MLS and the arrival of motorsports in Central Texas in the form of F1, MotoGP, NASCAR and everything in between.
His first on-air job came as the Weekend Sports Anchor at KLST in San Angelo. From there, he moved to Lubbock where he held the same job at KLBK covering all things Texas Tech.
His first experience in journalism came when he started writing for the sports section of the Daily Texan while he was a student at the University of Texas. From there, Chris got an internship in the sports department at KXAN.
Chris was born and raised in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston, where his parents still live. He has an older brother, Jason, who lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Volney, and their three kids who have given their Uncle Chris the best nickname he’s ever had: Uncle Beer. He also has another brother and two sisters that live in the DFW Metroplex.
When Chris isn’t working, he likes to go to concerts and mix it up in the pit, fall down a mountain with a snowboard strapped to his feet and annoy his neighbors with with his mediocre guitar skills and fading drum chops on the electric drums. He’s just as passionate about food as he is about sports and music, but he refuses to call himself a foodie. If you see him while he’s checking out Denver’s restaurant and bar scene, feel free to say hey!
He's super excited to explore all that Denver and Colorado have to offer and to dive headfirst into one of the best sports markets in the country.
