I'd be lying if I said I wasn't singing a little John Denver to myself when I first got to town and joined the 9NEWS team. For me, it was fitting. That John Denver can write a tune! If you don't agree, no hard feelings, but at least you know where I stand.
I anchor the weekends at Channel 9 and also field report during the week. It's a privilege and responsibility to bring you the news and to tell your stories. You make my job and career what it is. There's nothing I enjoy more than making a positive impact in a viewer's life or in my community.
You already know a little bit about my music tastes, which I would put up against anyone's (more than just JD I promise)! Career-wise, I've been a broadcast journalist for about nine years. I'm an Ohio boy (BUCKEYE) at heart and always will be, but I've seen a decent chunk of our country covering local news. I'd like to say it's made me the person I am today.
I worked in North Texas at KTEN-TV, chasing (and running from) severe weather in Texas and Oklahoma. I was honored to receive awards from the Texas and Oklahoma AP Broadcasters Association. While I lived near Dallas, I never became a Cowboy fan, but it was cool to get my feet wet with a camera on the sidelines, at the old Texas Stadium on Monday Night Football.
I've also worked in Albany, N.Y. at WTEN-TV. There's nothing like the state capitol in New York. Politics rule there, in case you were wondering. Picture a good 'ol fashioned rugby scrum, that's what you get on a daily basis in the capitol building, "rubbing shoulders" with NY's finest journalists. For some reason, when I was there, it was because someone was either not doing their job, or not doing it right. Most notably ... remember Eliot Spitzer?
I spent almost four years anchoring and reporting at WCIV in Charleston, S.C. I covered a local, high-profile adoption case, and followed it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. There was plenty to cover by way of politics in the Palmetto State too, like the rise and fall ... and rise again of now Congressman Mark Sanford. I should note I've never covered a candidate who lost their respective race. NEVER. I'm sure the streak will end someday, but I had to get that out there.
During a three-week investigation outside the state's medical university hospital, I exposed a rampant misuse of handicapped parking placards by hospital employees. I'm also proud to say we took home an Edward R. Murrow award during my stint in the Holy City.
Away from the job, I'm a 'dedicated' sports fan. It's a love-hate relationship. My heart's been broken one too many times, yet I keep coming back. I love to golf. You'd think I'd be halfway decent at it by now, you'd think. I'm learning the guitar (wish I would have started a long time ago). I love the beach, but the mountains are incredible. I can recite just about every line from all three Back to the Future and Karate Kid movies. If it wasn't for coffee, I would have given up a long time ago. And my family means everything to me - my wife the most.
