American Airlines pilots say they're losing sleep over hotel arrangements

American Airlines pilots issued a warning about the possibility of operational issues due to the increasing number of problematic hotels being used to house AA pilots on layovers around the world.

Denver Business Journal — American Airlines pilots on Friday issued another warning about the possibility of significant operational issues this summer at the world’s largest airline due to of the increasing number of problematic hotels being used to house AA pilots on layovers around the world.

In February, the Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents more than 15,000 American Airlines pilots, sent a memo to membership raising concerns about what AA pilots characterized as the nickel-and-diming mentality of AA management when it came to lining up suitable hotels for pilot layovers.

In the intervening four months, the situation has only gotten worse, per AA pilots. APA’s memo to pilots, obtained by the Chicago Business Journal, said that, in the opinion of the union’s National Hotel Committee, “AA’s hotel failures have reached a critical stage.”

The memo includes a lengthy list of both “red” and “yellow” hotels. The 21 red hotels, which include properties such as the Drury Inn Airport and Radisson Airport Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum and Hilton Olympia in London, England, have been deemed “completely unsuitable” as accommodations where pilots can get the crucial rest they need to safely operate aircraft.
