BROOMFIELD, Colo. — A pickup truck driver smashed through a metal fence Monday at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport and hit two unoccupied planes before rolling across a grassy field and and hitting a guardrail at the edge of airport property.
The 47-year-old driver was the only person in the Ford F-150 and was taken to a hospital for a medical condition. The driver wasn't injured in the crash and likely experienced a medical event that resulted in the crash, according to Colorado State Patrol.
No one else was injured, according to Karlyn Tilley with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The planes that were hit are privately owned, Tilley said.
"We're seeing a large debris field," Tilley said. "It's just a lot of pieces scattered around. The truck did cause extensive damage to several planes, unfortunately."
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration weren't involved in the investigation because this was a car crash, Tilley said.
