Fire Restrictions shouldn't impact hunting season in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife staffers say fire restrictions won't impact the hunting season.

Hunting season is here and some people are wondering if fire restrictions are going to impact that. So, naturally, 9NEWS went to Colorado Parks and Wildlife to find out.

Strict fire restrictions have been in place this summer because of all the wildfires burning in our state.

Many of them are being downgraded to Stage 1 Fire restrictions, which allow the use of firearms for hunting, as long as there are no explosive rounds.

CPW said the biggest concern is access to hunting grounds -- which they are closely watching.

"We're looking at fires that have happened in different game units and we're seeing that most areas still remain huntable for folks," said Travis Duncan, the statewide public information officer for CPW. "When [firefighters] are fighting fires, sometimes they have to bulldoze a trail or do the kind of work that creates fire breaks and that can create areas that are inaccessible to hunters."

Duncan said, according to their maps, the hunting grounds and fires are safely spread apart, so that isn't expected to be a problem.

However, if areas do become inaccessible CPW could refund license fees.

If you have any concerns, CPW says you're welcome to call them at 303-291-7526 and speak with one of their hunt planners.
