PUEBLO, Colo. — A body was recovered at about dawn Tuesday morning by rangers at Lake Pueblo State Park following an all-night search.
Just before 3:30 p.m. on Monday, three witnesses called police to report an empty boat that was adrift on No Name Cove, located on the lake's north shore, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Minutes later, a search and rescue operation was initiated.
Witnesses said they had seen the same boat about 20 minutes earlier being operated by a man who was fishing alone.
CPW staff searched on land and on water, but severe weather temporarily halted search efforts from the late afternoon until about 7 p.m. Rescuers then used sonar equipment and continued the search until a body was found at about 5 a.m. in nearly 40 feet of water.
“We offer our condolences to the family of this person,” said Monique Mullis, manager of Lake Pueblo State Park. “And I appreciate the efforts of our rangers who were determined to search until they made a rescue or recovery. Sadly, it ended in a recovery operation.”
The remains have since been turned over to the Pueblo County Coroner for identification and determination of a cause of death.
Lake Pueblo State Park is located about two hours south of Denver. The park offers 60 miles of shoreline and 10,000 acres of land.
