A student who made a 'vague' and 'general' threat of violence against Bear Creek High School was taken into custody Wednesday morning, Lakewood police said.
That 17-year-old student has since been charged with "interference with staff, students at an educational institution," according to Lakewood Police Cmdr. Mark Reeves.
That charge is a misdemeanor and was filed in Lakewood Municipal Court, Reeves said.
Principal Lynn Torr sent a letter to families Tuesday night saying several students reported a threat of violence made by a teenage boy at the school on social media.
Law enforcement and Jeffco Public Schools security staff investigated throughout the night, and were able to take a suspect into custody before the start of the school day.
Students can report any safety concerns anonymously using Safe2Tell or at 877-542-7233.
Classes resumed as usual on Wednesday, with extra security measures in places, school officials said.
The Cherry Creek School District and the Aurora Police Department are investigating a similar online threat made against Grandview High School in Aurora earlier in the week.
Threats were also made Monday against Dakota Ridge and Columbine high schools.
Investigators later determined that a 16-year-old had made the threats as a ‘joke’ and will likely face criminal charges.
The threats come just days after 17 people were shot and killed at a high school in Florida.
Bear Creek High School is located at 9800 West Dartmouth Pl.
