KUSA — A man has been charged with one count of first-degree murder in the fatal drive-by shooting of another man in July of 2016.

The suspect, Keyair Lewis, 28, allegedly shot and killed John Field, 50, while he was walking his dog near a family gathering in the 100 block of West 1st Avenue, according to the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Police said Field felt a passing vehicle come close to striking his dog, so he threw a beer bottle at the car, which hit the vehicle and shattered.

That’s when Lewis made a U-turn, drove back towards Fields and shot him multiple times, police said.

Lewis then fled the area and wasn’t located until ballistic and DNA evidence from other unrelated criminal incidents linked Lewis to the crime, the district attorney’s office said.

Field died from gunshot wounds while in hospice care in October 2016.

Lewis remains in custody at the Department of Corrections serving time for another criminal case.
