DENVER – Sources tell 9Wants to Know, the Denver Sheriff’s Department is investigating whether or not a family member of former Mayor Wellington Webb and current Manager of Safety Stephanie O’Malley, was given preferential treatment while she was being booked into jail last week.
O’Malley is the former mayor’s daughter.
Her niece, who is also Mayor Webb’s granddaughter, was arrested and booked on September 8 on an outstanding warrant for damaging, defacing or destruction of private property.
According to the summons obtained by 9Wants To Know, in July of 2016, Jaime Webb, 29, allegedly struck a victim’s car with a plastic snow scraper causing damage.
A warrant was issued for her arrest on the municipal charge after the victim walked into the police station and reported the crime.
9Wants To Know has learned that when Webb was booked into the downtown Denver Detention Center at 10:19 a.m. She told sheriff’s deputies she was the “daughter” of former Mayor Webb. She is actually his granddaughter.
According to Executive Director O’Malley’s office, Denver Sheriff Patrick Firman called O’Malley to tell her about the arrest after learning about Webb’s claim.
O’Malley’s office tells 9Wants To Know during that call, O’Malley instructed the Sheriff to ensure Webb “was being treated as any other inmate in their care and custody would be.”
O’Malley’s office said she followed up with an email to the Sheriff around 2 p.m. that day, reinforcing her request not to give Webb preferential treatment. The sheriff’s department confirms Webb was released from jail at 4:24 p.m. on September 9.
“An internal affairs investigation is going on into the recent booking of an individual,” Denver Sheriff’s Office spokesman Simon Crittle said.
“The Department is taking the matter seriously, as it does all internal affairs investigations,” Crittle added.
