15-year-old who escaped detention center staff in Golden back in custody

Police said a resident of the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center who is considered a violent offender has been found.

GOLDEN, Colo. — A 15-year-old who escaped from custody while getting his state ID and social security information at a Colorado Department of Motor Vehicle location in Golden has been found in Littleton, according to police.

The male juvenile is a resident of the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center and is considered a violent offender, according to the Golden Police Department. The Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center is operated by the U.S Department of Human Services-Department of Youth Services. 

9NEWS is no longer naming the juvenile since he is not a danger to the public anymore.

Staff from the detention center took the juvenile to the DMV at 16950 W. Colfax Ave. after leaving the center at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.

The juvenile was scheduled to transition to a step-down facility in July.

Area schools were on lock-out for about two hours during the search Thursday, but the lock-out was lifted shortly after.

The teen was a resident of El Paso County. He was committed to the Division of Youth Services in June 2018.  

He was transferred to the Youth Facility in Golden in October 2018. His mandatory release date was scheduled for June 2020.
